2 Obtaining patient information

Smooth communication is a prerequisite for successful patient care both in acute care, and at emergency clinic. It is important for paramedics and nurses to examine the patient’s history and any information relating to the visit.

2.1 Patient Interview on site

Pm: Good evening. I am paramedic (EMS nurse) Maria. What is the problem here?

FM: I called the emergency response centre (112) because I couldn’t make out what my spouse was saying.

Pm: Where is your spouse now?

FM: In the bedroom.

Pm: Anton will go and examine your spouse. I’ll ask you a few questions in the meantime.

FM: Ok. The bedroom is over there. The door is open.

Pm: What is your spouse’s name and personal identity code?

FM: Hang on. I don’t remember his identity number, I’ll get the KELA card (health insurance card). Here it is.

Pm: When did your spouse’s symptoms begin?

FM: I called immediately when they started. About fifteen minutes ago.

Pm: Is he on any medication?

FM: No, his overall health is good. Do these symptoms mean he has a stroke?

Pm: It’s too early to tell. My colleague is examining him right now and will contact the emergency care doctor to discuss follow-up treatment.

FM: Can I go and see him now?

Pm: Sure you can.
