Smooth communication is a prerequisite for successful patient care both in acute care, and at emergency clinic. It is important for paramedics and nurses to examine the patient’s history and any information relating to the visit.

2.2 Patient Interview at an outpatient clinic

N: Good afternoon. I’m nurse Anna. Are you Veera Koskela?

P: Yes, that’s me.

N: What is your patient identity code?

P: 311291-528K

N: What brought you to the emergency room?

P: I came here because of my back pains.

N: When did your symptoms start?

P: The back pain started two days ago. This morning the pain started to radiate to my left foot.

N: Does moving cause you pain?

P: The pain is continuous, even when I don’t move at all.

N: Have you taken any pain killers?

P: Yes. I took 400mg Ibuprofen two hours ago.

N: Lie down here and just wait for a little while. The doctor will come and examine you soon.
